Bengali About To Be Announced The Sweetest Language In The World?

If you are a Bengali, changes are that you have already received tweets, SMSs or Orkut/Facebook updates proclaiming that Bengali (বাংলা) has been declared the sweetest language in the world.

Here is the SMS that I received:

130 crores people in the world sing their national anthem in Bengali language.
125 crores in Chineese language and 94 crores in English.
BENGALI is on top not only because yesterday UNESCO declared that Bengali is the sweetest language of the world (2nd and 3rd sweetest being Spanish and Dutch).
So we should feel proud for our language.
Send this SMS to all your friends…
Feel proud to be a BENGALI

Here are some of the updates circulating on Twitter.

Bengali-World's-Sweetest-Language

Religious and regional jingoism aside, if true, this is indeed reason to celebrate for all bongs across the world. The online poll in question was conducted by UNESCO a couple of months back. However, I couldn’t find any official word on this matter. According to TOI, the official announcement may come on Rabindranath Tagore’s (the first Asian Nobel laureate) 150th birth anniversary in May (পঁচিশে বৈশাখ ).

Clearly this is a rumour. There is not a word about this on UNESCO’s website and not a single reliable website with some information on this topic. only tweets and blog posts from unreliable sources. UNESCO is unlikely to conduct such polls. Few months back there was a rumour that India’s National Anthem has been declared the best anthem in the world. however, when I tried to verify, there was no official word on it. then i cam across many pages where the writer was criticized for writing such a thing. National anthem being a sensitive issue, UNESCO was unlikely to conduct such a poll. Similarly, I feel, language is also a very sensitive issue and UNESCO is unlikely to say such a thing. Besides, what is the definition of a sweet language?

What nonsense is going around on the net in the name of UNESCO attributing “best national anthem” to janaganamana and “sweetest language” tag to Bengali? This goes completely against the spirit of UN of rating cultures and degrades other people and cultures. How can national anthems be compared? Somebody really stupid out there is spreading these rumours in the name of UNESCO to give it credibility and pathetic Bengalis are latching on to it in utter desperation. UNESCO has better things to do than conduct such frivolous surveys that hurt other peoples’ self esteem. Please stop this jingoistic nonsense! If there was any truth in it, show where has this been published outside India and where in UN’s website? The fact that this has been orchestrated to coincide with the Bengali New Year is the surest proof that it was fabricated.

After Singur issue abusive attacks on Bengali community got a high. I have physically witnessed few incidents where Bengalis were abused brutally in a vulgar way but this vulgarity now jumped on some online media like Rediff. Surprisingly Rediff tolerates every abuse on Bengali community, which actually encourages those criminals who want to abuse Bengali creed.
Singur was a political issue. Bengalis didn’t push away Nano factory from Singur as it was portrayed by hindi media across India. Hindi media never informed Indian society, that most of the land owners gave their land for Nano factory. Few political hooligans snatched the wish of majority & our poor physically challenged state govt crumbled in front of those hooligans!
These Bengali haters were keen to search issues to bash Bengali creed & after Singur they’ve got it. Their forefathers like Moraji Desai, Rajiv Gandhi, Chacha Nehru were infamous Bengali haters, they are actually carrying the tradition of their clan & hegemony.

At a regional level, this is happening in West Bengal. Despite its obviously slackening pace of industrialisation, in the post-reforms period, West Bengal has racked up the fastest rate of economic growth, both in terms of GDP and per capita income. Now juxtapose this fact, evidenced by official statistics put out by the Government of India, against the huge investments in industry taking place in, say, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. And we are left with a startling picture of a State whose one-time industrial primacy is now a fading memory, actually ahead of the big industrialising States. But since we cannot grasp what we cannot see — after all, new factories and five-star hotels are the only visible proof of development most of us accept — we tend to castigate the CPI(M)-led government for “what it has done to West Bengal”. This is only a perception and not the reality.

Bengalis are 15-20% of the entire population of South Asia. Yet they accomplished NOTHING until the British came and gifted them with Kolkata city and modern education.

These Bengalis profited from British invasion when the rest of India was ruined.

All Kolkata monuments are British gifts: Victoria memorial, Howrah bridge, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Esplanade, etc.

Tagore, Bankim Chatterjee, Jagdish Bose – all a result of sycophancy towards the British. British sycophant Tagore wrote Jana Gana Mana only to kowtow to the British overlords. The only truly “patriotic” poem he wrote was for ANOTHER country (Bangladesh). The rest of the Bengali “freedom fighters” were only motivated by the partition of Bengal. They hadn’t raised a finger during 1857 when Mangal Pandey of UP had to lead the uprising in Kolkata.

    Reply to kam:

1, 2 & 4. Yeah, sure. If you conveniently leave out Bengalis from your list, that makes a very convincing argument. I assume Vivekananda, Tagore, Lalon, Sri Ramkrishna don’t count as good philosophers to you because they are Bengalis?

    3. So having fought plenty of battles is being civilised in your books? Being a peaceful race that has fought minimal battles and still survived as a continuous civilisation for over 3 thousand years is not a good thing?

    5. So much art and culture and yet India’s national anthem and republic song are both in Bengali. Let’s not forget South Asia’s only Nobel Laureate in literature was won by a Bengali too. Yeah, surely Bengalis have produced little.

    6. Same as 1 & 2. You leave out places like Paharhpur, Mahasthangarh and all the remnants of the ancient Bengali empires and then call foul. Very convenient.

Since your measure of accomplishments seems to be how many wars were fought, yes, Bengalis accomplished little. The Rajputs and Mughals fought so many wars. Where are these civilisations now? In fact, where is the great Ottoman civilisation or the Mongolian civilisation that once ruled over China? Yet, here we are, peace-loving Bengalis entering into the 4th millenia of our continuous existence.

When the British occupied India, Bengal was the largest tax-generator for the British. You’d have to add the taxes from 3 non-Bengali provinces to add up to Bengal’s amount. Clearly, Bengal was pulling out the tax from thin air.

Bengalis spearheaded each and every one of India’s revolutionary movement from Sipahi Biplob to Swadeshi to INA. Rebels like Bhagath Singh were inspired by Bengali socialists. When Congress was sucking up to the Brits for Dominion status, Bengalis were building an independence movement. The British had so much disdain for Bengali and Punjabi revolutionaries that, of all the provinces in British Raj, only two provinces had to be split under communal lines. Just because you only chose to read certain parts of the history, don’t go around belittling Bengal’s contribution to the freedom you take for granted. South Asia stands free because Bengalis spilled their blood.

Tagore never wrote anything for another country. Tagore wrote something for Bengal, his motherland. Apparently, he too felt that there was pride to be taken in Bengal’s peaceful ways instead of the belligerent life views rampant in the rest of South Asia. Btw, if you think Tagore’s only patriotic song was Amar Shonar Bangla, you need to go back to elementary school and re-learn a few things. The man was prolific. Even the non-Bengali Indian leaders felt that which is why Jana Gana Mana was made the national anthem.

    Long live free Bengal!

1, 2 & 4. Vivekananda, Tagore, Lalon, Sri Ramkrishna don’t count as they were during the colonial period of India when Kolkata became the British empire’s capital.

3.Having fought battles is not same as defending yourself. Bengalis are known to be a cowardly race who cannot defend themselves.

    5. Again product of British influence. Nothing worth mentioning before colonial times.

    6. Only a bigot can mention Paharhpur and Mahasthangarh in the same breath as Qutb Minar, Haridwar, Dwarka, and Khajuraho.

Bengal didn’t spearhead the Indian revolution. In fact it was the first state to succumb to the British in 1757. What cowardice!

hi mr kam. i know u r very jealous about all bengalis.. but remember, more u hate us, more we wl grow. and there is no doubt in that. since beginning of the history, always bengalis faced bad feelings from all other indian communities, like urs. (just an example, how much Gandhiji dislikes Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose? if u dnt know, thn u can find in history books..) but inspite of that we r the number one in all the fields. bengalis r known for their intelligence, behaviour, culture, language, etc.. u pls tell us how many nobel prizes ur community has brought to india???we already brought 2 nobel till date for our Great Country India. in all the fields, we always guide from the front row. if u hv any doubt, pls collect the information and verify it.so pls hate us more bcoz that makes us grow even more and through all others out of the game. I m very proud to be a Bengali as well as an Indian. But u r not an Indian bcoz Indian culture does not permit any of its citizen to hate others languages, castes and religions. This is the basic thing u should know.I know u wl b very angry after reading this and will rply with another bomblasting comment. but i dnt mind bcoz as i said hate more……….more…….more……….and more……. and we wl grow…………grow…….grow………………………..grow……………….and grow our best. it works as vocal tonic to us. pls remember this.

What do you mean by “since the beginning of history”, you stupid ballface? The rest of India was composing the finest poetry and building breathtaking edifices when you jungle monkeys were still swinging in the trees.

You moron, your entire “greatness” was between 1850 – 1950. You have been totally insignificant throughout history.

      You drooling retard Subhasis,

You just proved the number one characteristic of Bengalis: STEALING CREDIT FROM OTHER STATES.

      1. Silabhadra was one of MANY. Nalanda University (which happens to be in Bihar, a state that you don’t like too much), lasted for over 600 years. There must’ve been many principals. Silabhadra was just one of many. Furthermore, Huien Tsang (real name: Xuan Zang) was already a reknowned scholar. So he hired Silabhadra to teach him a thing or two. So what? A bit of Xuan Zang’s fame rubbed off onto this Bengali. BIG DEAL!

      2. Again, Pala, Pala, Pala. Is that all you got you nitwit? Atisha had Mngol features. I’ve seen his potrait in the Me (New York). Oh, and the Palas established their empire in the Bengal-Bihar border, but their capital was in PATALIPUTRA (Bihar!). And their ancestry was anything but Bengali. As usual you are stealing credit from the Biharis.

      3. Only a parochial Bengali would consider Chandidas to be famous. Every region, every India language has better poets than that, you silly Bong chimpanzee.

      4. Krittivs Ojha – Who the hell heard of his name outside Bengal you moron. He is one in a hundred. Besides, the name sounds Maithili. In fact my Maithili friend (who hates Bengalis) says that Krittivas Ojha was born in Mithila province, and was a Maithili poet…the same as Vidyapati, another Maithili poet that you pathetic Bong animals claim to be a Bengali.

      5. The Palas hailed from Bihar, you moron. There ancestry was anything but Bengali.

      6. Look retard, if you want to advertise yourself as a nincompoop, by all means go ahead. But the Gupta dynasty was anything but Bengali. They were from UP-Bihar.

      7. The Sufi movement originated in Iran. It percolated into northern India. If you want to thump your chest of purely local heroes, by all means do so. Nevertheless, the fact is that Bengali had practically nothing to do with the Sufi movement except locally. Go ahead, you parochial beat…..thump you chest…..make my day!

      8. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s parents emigrated from Orissa, you birdbrained jingo. Guess what, even my Oriya friend says that Oriyas don’t like Bong animals because of their bragging nature. Neither do tmyother friends who hail from Assam, where Chaitanya’s parents lived after leaving Orissa, and before emigrating to Nadia (WB)

      9. Ballal Sen! Just a minor character in history you stupid ballface!

      10. It’s JAYADEVA you baboon, not “Joideb”. Besides Jayadeva hailed from Orissa, not Bengal. In fact it was a HOAX created by you Bengali bastards that “Joideb” was a Bengali. Jayadeva was born in Orissa, as per authentic history.

      11. Sulpani etc. All regional folks you idiot. They aren’t worth mentioning in the national level.

      12. Pala, Pala, Pala. That’s all you got! Besides, the capital of the Palas was in Pataliputra, and their ancestry was also Bihar. Credit stealing as usual!

      13. There we go. Pala of Bihar!

      14. Maharsi what? That’s yet another regional figure you pathetic animal.

      15. Sasanka was a marauding animal, you harebrained Bengali! He tried to destroy Bihar’s pride, Nalanda. The rest were all ethnically, Bihari you grovelling, snivelling, Bengali creature. Stealing credit from Biharis as usual, eh?

    @Amit khatuwala
plz dont forget we are an independent ethnic in this federal structure. Our language is our identity, no matter what our religion is. Its very common in ur cow belt states, casteism. Thakurs are proud thakurs, shukla’s are proud brahmins, Maheswari’s are proud Maheswaris, etc, why dont you preach them to come out of this casteism & be proud to be indian? I have experienced these different people have set up their “caste offices” with name of “Thakur Samaj”, “Brahmin Samaj”, “Maheswari Samaj”. You should teach them to be indian first.
We bengalis are another independent ethnic in india & we’ve full right to practice our culture, food, language & all bengalis should be proud of that. & you dont need to remind bengalis what is patriotism. History knows that.

  23. ADG September 29, 2010 at 9:20 pm #

I have something to say against one Mr Kam when he comes to a conclusion that Bengalis have not many important events in ancient history so their current contribution for India has to be trivialised! Above all this gentleman Kam ( I donot know from which community he comes but it must be a culturally and ethically a very inferior race which teaches it’s members to be racist ) donot know much about history or culture of Bengal . And I donot think he ever cares to know it. I wonder why we have so many Indian versions of infamous British statesman like Macaulay who enjoyed a particular sadistic pleasure by demeaning people of the subcontinent without knowing much about India. Mr Kam is an inferior Indian version of Macaulay only. Thatswhy he knows nothing about the glory of the empires of Sasanka, The Palas & The Senas , have no idea about the Nyaya school of philosophy of Bengal, donot know about Pala Bronze, donot know about the spendid Sompur Budhhist Monastry or the tajerhat Mosque ( both UNESCO heritages) , the Bengali Buddhist scholars like Srigyan Dipankar Atish Bengal’s own architectural styles of Ratna, Chala & Jorbangla and only concentrates on few elements of Indian history & culture he is aware of.If he is really interested to know about the history & culture of Bengal he can read the works of some of the best Indian historians like Rakhaldas Banerjee ( Co discoverer of Mahan jo Daro ) or Ramesh chandra Majumdar . Unfortunately for Mr Kam , some of the best historians of India are , like all other fields, Bengali themselves. Another thing Mr Kam, donot consider Americans canadians, Australlians, Latin Americans , New Zealanders or the Japanese inferior to the Greek , the Chinese , the pakistanis or the Egyptians since the former ones donot have five thousand year old artefacts or classical dances and the later group have a glorious past. Only nation of creeps prefer to bask in past glory. We Bengalis fortunately have things to be proud of at present , and Amartya Sen, Muhammad Yunus, PC Sorkar ,Sourabh Ganguly ,Bengal’s football team , our Durga puja artistry all prove that we are still the best in India for which we neednot care whether we have a classical dance or millenium old mummy inside our cubbard. We are not ossified by any dead historic orthodoxy.& thatswhy we are the most intellectually vigorous, most aware , most free of socio religiousbigotry or casteist divisions and one of the least criminalised or least corrupt people in India. While not denying our evils or defects in Bengali national character ,We still have enough justifications in being proud of our many goodnesses & our Bengali identity, and surely , surely our melifluous , sweet mother tongue that rings Amar Sonar Bangla is one of the best things we have. Thank you UNESCO for chosing our Bengali as the sweetest language.. you have chosen right.
