Avira AntiVir 10 (Premium and Personal) Released

Avira AntiVir is one of the best performing security products in the market. Not only is it excellent in detecting malwares, but also fast and lightweight. In the past, I have time and again recommended Avira AntiVir to users looking for a free as well as paid (premium) antivirus software.

AntiVir 10 is a fairly significant update and the changes are more than skin deep. The key new features in Avira AntiVir 10 are:

Avira-Antivir-10-Personal

Arrow Improved Proactive Defence: According to Avira, their new ProActiv is better equipped to detect unknown malwares (those not present in the databse). The new ProActiv component utilises behavioural analysis in addition to heuristic, generic and pattern-based scanning methods.
Arrow Cloud Protection: ProActiv also introduces cloud protection services to Avira. If you chose to join the Avira AntiVir ProActiv Community ( in-the-cloud component of ProActiv), you will be able to automatically run an advanced check on suspicious files. These files will be sent to Avira’s security experts for analysis and the results are then used to further refine the behaviour-based detection.
Arrow Generic Repair: Although, Avira has always been good at detecting malware, past versions often had trouble with repairing damaged systems. With generic repair, Avira GmbH hopes to change this. The generic repair feature searches for any residual data and removes this from the hard disk and registry after an infection has been detected
Arrow Shadow Copy: Avira has developed its own enhanced implementation of the Shadow Copy feature present in Windows Vista and Windows 7. This service is offered by the avshadow.exe process.
[Update: Avira doesn't actually provide a shadow copy feature, instead it uses it for scanning locked files.]
Arrow Enhanced GUI: The enhanced user interface has simplified program management. Several frequently used settings previous visible only in expert mode has been moved to the standard mode.
Arrow Improved Parental Controls: Avira now offers a finer degree of control over various system activities. For example, parents can now restrict the duration of internet usage through Avira.

One question that is commonly asked by users is, “What is the difference between Avira AntiVir Premium and Personal (Free)?”. You can refer to this chart to get an idea about the difference in features supported by various Avira products.

Both free and premium editions of Avira utilise the same database. In fact, with Avira 10, even free users will be protected against adware and spyware infections. However, features such as ProActiv (behavioral analysis), WebGuard (website scanner) and AntiSpam are not present. Another significant disadvantage is that auto-update in Avira AntiVir Personal can be scheduled to run only once in every twenty-four hours. One day is a fairly long time on the internet and the lack of quick automatic updates may leave users of the free antivirus software unprotected for several hours. The other disadvantage of the free version is that, it occasionally displays pop-up ads for Avira AntiVir Premium.

Avira AntiVir doesn’t’ introduce any revolutionary new features. Instead, it focuses on building upon and perfecting the features present in the previous builds. It is still extremely light on the system and feels fast. Both, Avira AntiVir 10 Premium and Personal are excellent options for anyone looking for a capable and lightweight antivirus product.

I didn’t like it. I used its previous version for my lappy, it made my newly installed Windows like a turtule (not kidding :D ).

I usually used Avira real time shield for File system scanning, eicar test for it is very good. When i copy the test phase code and save it on note pad, it takes no more than 0.5 second to warned me and block this file from me, and i really glad Avira 10 still maintain the Proactive initiative. :)

THanks for the info on this and on the Avira Shadow copy service.
I have been using Avira Personal for about two years, have used many other paid and free AV products.
After the experiences I (and those I know) have had with other products, I have settled on Avira as the one for my Free AV use.
It seems to me to be configurable enough for my tech style, and it is also pretty light on the system (as far as I can tell with watching and with Process Explorer).
My only complaint is that it is a tad too eager to identify a few of my tech tools as suspicious (e.g. some of my Nirsoft tech tools and audio encoding apps).

I have recommended the Avira Premium suite to a number of less technical friends and they seem happy with it and have been renewing it also.

    Thanks for your article.
