Actually, Opera has been working on a new JS rendering engine for nearly a year. It's called Carakan. It may be included in Opera 10.5 pre-alpha which will be released on 22nd Dec. As far as incompatibilities are concerned, due to the small market share Opera has never had it easy. But, that doesn't mean that they aren't trying. In fact very few other browser manufacturers put in as much effort. Have a look at this blog post.

Good post. You have made a near comprehensive list of all annoyances and how to block them.
One thing that miffs me about opera these days is that they have become less focused about the browser and have started diverting their energies on extra stuff like unite etc.
As a result of which, opera has a very bad AJAX performance and a large number of incompatibilities. The Opera team should really get back to the main browser.
