Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology : Hell Breaks Loose

Last night I had tweeted that some sort of a silly fight was going on in the college. I couldn’t have been any more wrong. As morning approached and the facts became clearer, the college was engulfed in an unprecedented communal riots.
The precursor to today’s events was a one-on-one fight between two second year students – Diwas (a localite) and Ujwal. However the real trouble began yesterday, when Diwas assembled a force of his own with help from Kunga Bhutia – the son of Education Minister of Sikkim [ It has come to my recent kotice that Kunga is not the son of the education Minister. I sincerely apologise for any defamation or trouble caused to anyone involved by this mis-stated fact]. Yesterday evening, four second year students – Ujjwal, Gautam, Chandan and Jitendar were rounded up and assaulted by Kunga and his friends.
The injured students turned to the Hostel Superintendent (Kamal Thakur) for help and medical attention. Little did they know, what lay ahead of them. Instead of calling an ambulance Mr. Thakur called up the police. Appalled at the apathy displayed by the college the students themselves arranged in ambulance. Mr. Thakur displayed his brilliant administrative skills once again. The ambulance was stopped at the College Exit, giving Kunga the perfect opportunity to once again round up the already injured four. In an horrifying display of savagery Gautam and Chandan were manhandled once again in front of Mr. Thakur.
As the news spread students started assembling in front of the academic building to show their solidarity. Their demands were simple -
- Take stern action against Kunga
- Release the four students from lockup and provide them some much needed medical attention.
Once again the college administration failed to react quickly and efficiently. By midnight, three jeeps of Police and one jeep of RAF were inside the college. Soon after, Kunga and his friends were presented before a panel of teachers (and representative from the students). Meanwhile, the students learnt that Kunga had assaulted another student (Kaushik Rajbanshi) immediately before appearing in front of the panel. The atmosphere grew even more grim with this revelation. After a lengthy discussion the administration promised to resolve the crisis and guaranteed the release of students by 8:00 am. On the behest of the students a medical staff was dispatched to Rangpo Police station. Another shocking revelation awaited the students – in spite of claims to the contrary the police hadn’t yet provided any medical care to the locked up students.
The crowd continued to grow with every passing hour as the situation threatened to spiral out of control. Kunga is someone with a lot of clout and he didn’t make any effort to leash his audacity. While the police was busy handling the peaceful pressure cell, Kunga went around showing the middle finger to the teachers and taunting the protesters. He also had the audacity to intimidate 2nd year MCA Students using steel rods, placing them on their necks and forcing them to apologise for their lives. Kunga knew he would be safe, no matter what. He came and then he left without even hearing out the complaints against him. When the students urged the police to stop him, the police did exactly the opposite. Aditya Saha (3rd yr) was roughed up in front of the Director, Superintendent, Chief Engineer and notable teachers who were too scared to speak up.

It soon became evident that neither the police nor the college was interested in justice. While the local students imported goons from the neighbourhood, the police simply chose to invest all their energy in harassing the students demonstrating peacefully. Even the knowledge that the outside goons were armed with knives didn’t change their indifference.
By morning another truck-full of RAF and several companies of armed forces had arrived at the college campus. This force was mainly intended to handle the yet peaceful protesters who adopted to constitutional methods of protesting. The Director seemed stunned and helpless in front of the growing crisis.

At around 10:30 am one of the four students (Chandan) was temporarily released on the condition that the students will immediately abort their protest. However, this turned out to be simply a stunt by the administration to dispose off the pressure cell which seemed to be growing stronger with the hour. Although suspicious of their intent, the student body complied as it did not wish to risk the careers of ‘The Four’ as apparently the SP was going to file a charge sheet against them otherwise.
For the time being the student body receded to the other end of the campus and allowed the administration to secure control over the academic block. This proved to be a mistake as Yajur Chadda(3rd Year) and Ashutosh (4rth yr) were rounded up and beaten up by the local students (who were supporting Kunga). The police simply stood there watching. When Harshpreet and a few of his friends attempted to rescue Yajur they were flogged brutally by the Police. Meanwhile, the director chose to look the other way and ignored all requests to leave the comfort of his chamber.
The police also went back on their promise of releasing the locked up students. This prove to be the final straw. The non-violent demonstration grew violent within minutes and several college buildings were damaged in the rampage. This angry mob went haywire attempting attacks on the other camp trying to get their bite of flesh. The police were forced to fire tear-gas shells to push back the raging students.

As evening approached the riot lost its momentum and seemed to come to an abrupt halt. Though the simmering tension in the atmosphere was easily perceivable. As things stand now, the college will remain closed for an indefinite period of time with students instructed to vacate the hostel tomorrow.
Its astounding how the college administration managed to turn a peaceful demonstration into a violent riot. All that was required from the college administration was guts. Guts to punish the guilty. Guts to ignore political pressure. Guts to remain unbiased. But they failed. They failed the students, they failed themselves.
Update 1: Two Assamese Girls from Himalayan Pharmacy injured in stone pelting by local students. Assam Government expresses concern.
“Students of the Institute were targeted by locals after an altercation during a football match turned violent,” a teacher at the institute said by telephone requesting he not be named…“Many students from Assam who boarded buses and other public transport were stopped on the road and forced to get down and then severely assaulted,” the teacher said…At least 20 students have since been admitted to hospitals with serious injuries.
Update 2: Nitish Kumar (CM, Bihar) speaks with CM of Sikkim about the security of Bihari students.
Update 3: More information available at the Unofficial SMIT Blog.
Update 4: In-depth event list (in chronological order) available at Techarraz.com.
Update 5: The incident is recieving a fair amount of coverage from the mainstream press. Telegraph India has so far published a couple of articles (Tech school flare-up, Manipal shuts down after clash).
However, TT got a couple of facts wrong. Firstly, the problem originated in a football match and not a volleyball match (which wasn’t a part of Vastusasmitam – the inter-college fest). Also the Chief Warden is G.C.Mishra and not A.C.Mishra.
Update 6: More snaps from VoiceofSikkim

Update 7: An account of the incident by Dipesh Pradan : The Real Truth of SMIT. Although he has a different take on the incident, we do agree that the poor administration is the main cause of the uproar.

CE HOD is he main culprit………….
he has taken our lan away frm us for personal reasons only…
REMARK TO “DAR”
It seems that u r a localite too, but let me remind u insulting a girl doesnt proves ur manliness neither by fighting one on one. It rather shows how cheap ur mentality is, that the reason you are insulting a girl in this blog with shame full words. Atleast we know how to respect others. This is the only reason that shows why this FIGHT took place….. You guys never know how to respect others. Jis des mein daru ki dukan subha ka 6 baje khul jaye wo kya jane socialism kya hota hai…
n to you “student to a student”
i totally agree on your statement regarding dar ..but.. but firstly don’t compare the mentality of people of sikkim and yours,
you go back to your state and ask the female community how safe do they feel travellin alone after sunset?
you go back to your state and see for yourself how much socialism exist there?
here the liquor shops may open at 6 in the morning or what so ever, still it records the minimum cfrime rates in the whole of india
we give respect to those who give respect.in return.
and don’t you dare point a finger at sikkim because if you do once more it could prove fatal for you.
u hav no idea wat ur fitin 4 u kno dat..don turn hom in2 hel..
excuse me….u have no right to say nething about sikkim….we r known to b peaceful pll….nd have da minimum crime rates recorded…bsides we r ANYDAY much more civilised dan da likes of u…i dont mean non sikkimese pll….i mean YOU….who have such a cheap…and shallow outlook on life and resort to generalising….come on have a mind of ure own…and dude wad is ure prob wid da liquor shops bein open by 6 am..atleast our govt…believes in our civility and knows we will behave responsibly….(unlike ures i guess)…it shows dere faith in us…also dont be a moron…take into considerstion da climate and geography…and if u STILL have so much prob wid our state…den screw u…pack ure bags and go to ure desh jahan sharab ki dukanein nahi hoti hai……EAST OR WEST SIKKIM IS DEFINITELY DA BEST…U HEAR ….DA BEST….
Ajay non locals are non locals, do they have any beneficaries of the government given to non locals in your state if then mention one, first look inside your state, where all these rape cases, murders, extortion, bribery etc …its a long list, occurs. Then talk about our state, ok. And for your kind information the most corrupted politician and corruption prevails in your state now ours. You non locals have brought corruption and trying to destroy the peace and prosperity of our state.
TEMME SOMETHING IS ANY STATE PERFECTLY ALRIGHT???IT IS BECAUSE OF FEW DAT WE KEEP FIGHTING AMONG OURSELVESNTHE CULPRITS GO AROUND SCOTFREE.SO GUYS STOP FIGHTING.SHOW SOME RESPECT AND FIND THE CUASE BECAUSE ITS NOT ABOUT SIKKIM OR BIHAR OR SIKKIM OR ASSAM….ITS ABOUT INDIA.WE R THE FUTURE OF INDIA.REMEMBER DIVIDED WE FALL.AM GIVIN GYAN BECAS AM SO CRESTFALLEN TO SEE ALL DESE ABUSES N HATREDS FR EACH UDR.WE R BROTHERS.INSTEAD OF FIGHTING WITH EACH UDR FIND A WAY TO COEXIST PEACEFULLY…IT WL BE MORE FRUITFUL.JAI HIND!!
Guys, enough of mudslinging. I’m not a bihari, nor a nepali, but believe me, as a friend, as an indian, sab jagah pe acche aur bure hotey hain. Bihar is dirty because of its bloody politians and poor illiterate people who cant afford to read and hence are easily misguided. But it produces the maximum number of iitians and ips, ias officers.and sikkim…its wonderful. In one word. Lets stop this bhai. All of us should unite against the motherfcuking authority. And its not that i am sending to you only. Instead of abusing, just be a little polite and let them know the facts. I know it pains when someone abuses one or one’s state, but truly speaking, i always knew my nepali friends from school to be doing things with a difference.
http://realtruthofsmit.blogspot.com/
pallab de read this and if any of the information is wrong u can contact me and also please do not spread wrong information as to kunga being a son of the education minister of sikkim.. the eductaion minister of sikkim is Mr.N.K.Pradhan , where as Kunga is a bhutia and also u ve got all your facts wrong and we will bring it to the notice of the college administration and also the police for spreading wrong information and communal tension…..
“what actually happened” blog is totally miss leading………….
its not the real thing that has happened……
it was a 1 on 1 fight outside the gate with a local student which was seen by 25 students……
and after that more than 50 locals came to SMIT campus and had badly beaten up three non local students in side kamal thakur’s office and kamal thakur didn’t even try to stop the locals……………
and dipesh plssssss dont write any wrong informatino in ur blog “what actually happened”…………..
added to my post.
will comment on it later when I reach home.
My friend Sangay Bhutia, please yaar, cool down. He is presenting his side of the story. Its his blog. How do you react to a september 10 timesofindia report that says that there were 140 buses that dropped us non localites along with the faculty as escorts?
What should we do?
Boycott toi? Or ransack their office?
Fighting will lead us to nowhere. Believe me. I have seen bigger fights, and nothing conclusive came out of it. What happened that day was due to irresponsibility on OUR (LOCAL AS WELL AS NON LOCAL’s) part.
We should all be ashamed of ourselves for what happened. And not blame one another. The administration could have easily stopped it, but they did not. If we dont unite, we all are going to suffer. The authority doesnt see who is nepali and who is non nepali. All they need is scapegoats. Its a humble request from a 4th year guy.
Its so shameful that you guys are here to prove that your respective states are better. Let of tell you. All states are fucked up. Sabme gandgi bhadi padi hai. Kam zyada pe ladai kyun karte ho yaar? Gandgi to gandgi hoti hai, hai na?
Aur pata hai gandgi kyun hai?
Because of people like us. Busy mud slinging at one another and least bothered about the real issues, which are raped at will who take advantage of our in fighting. Awesome guys, with guys like us, India is going to go a long way!
For the student by the student, abey yaar, do we really need to fight here? Its easy to abuse, but more difficult to keep shut. Thats why its a virtue. We had enough of mud slinging. We can now put a stop to that. And try to return to normalcy. Settle things down. Understand yaar.
Well my dear DAR i wana ask you one thing DO YOU HAVE THE GUTS TO TELL THIS ON ANY BIHARI’S FACE? no you dont we biharis are proud to be an INDIAN and then a BIHARI and my dear friend its you who have complex from us becoz you know we are more intelligent and civilized and where ever we go we have proved to be the BEST and rahi baat har jagah se bhagane ki no one can and would ever touch us its just some bunch of INSUCRE people like you who dunt have the balls to compete starts these protests and make these comments so my advice to you
GET WELL SOON MAMU ………..I am with you
yaar koi problem hai to bihar jaake dekh lo hum log bahar walo ko kese rakhte hai aur sun bhai ye india hai yaha sab logo ko kahi bhi jane ki ijajat hai samgha agar nahi hoti to tum log india ke kisi bhi hisse mai jao jana to bihar se hi hota hai wahi train mai daboch lete sab, per hum aisa nahi soochte hum pehle hindustani hai baad mai bihari tum bhi ye hi socho to sahi hai nahi to hindustan se india hue hai aur bhi tootna hai kya???
Some guys were complaining abou Pallab’s blog and threatening him. Well, i have a word of advice for those. Have you gone through Dipesh Pradhan’s blog?
What he has written is entirely, yes ENTIRELY, different from Pallab’s blog, with no mention of the other side’s story, just like Pallab’s. There you find no mention of Kumar Gaurav and Harpreet Singh getting severely injured. By suppressing these and talking from his own point of view, dont you think that he too is spreading communal violence? I was saddened to see no comments that said it was wrong. Mr. Bhutia, the world is least interested in what YOU or I think as an individual. The world is interested to know the truth…and truth, my dear , is garbed. The localites are presenting their side of the story, and the non localites their’s. What is there to fume so much? You are angry at Pallab because his facts do not match yours. What you believe, may be half true. Maybe. (Even now, i grossly believe that the administration is responsible for making this a local versus non local issue). That does not mean that you would threaten him. You can only create one more fight if you touch some one for posting a blog. Everyone is free to say what they want; just that they should be sensible enough to see that it is not hurting any body. Now, that is a difficult thing to do. To remain impartial. Can you argue that even Dipesh Pradhan is absolutely correct?
As I told…truth, is garbed. Let us not fight anymore plz. Lets bury our differences, unite and ask some questions to the administration.
This is not the first time a riot took place but it already happened before on the year 2002 when students were being assaulted by teachers, two students were tied up to a tree, made naked and beaten up for three days by couple of teachers. Reason: for protesting on same issue Nepali (Localites) and Assamies (Non Localites).
College Administration doesnt know how to build a career for students but they only knows how to suck money out of them by mentally and physically torturing them. This has been followed ever since but no one have ever heard our voices. No actions were taken.
This Is For All The new Comers:
College Administration always fools the parent of new comers by saying they will keep the 1st year away and protected from seniors but the real truth lies some where else. They saves their own ass, so that the reality doesn’t reveal by interacting with the presently studying student.
The truth is College believes in extra income by giving subject back to subjects and earning extra money by making them sit for EXTRA SEMESTER paying for Rs 4000 for each back papers. This is done totally OFF THE RECORD.
INCOME FOR YEAR 2009
Roughly No. Of Students Attended: 600
Minimum No of subjects back for each student: 1
Fee for Extra Semester: Rs 4000/each subject
Minimum Income: Rs 4000 x 1 x 600 = Rs 2400000/- only.
QUITE OUTSTANDING! SERIOUSLY WELL MANAGED BY MASTERMINDS…..
This Year Students have been admission-ed to Department like Instrumentation and Civil which actually never been existed before and NO PLACEMENT FROM THIS BRANCH HAS EVER BEEN HELD OBVIOUSLY.
College Prevented the new comers from getting the news by not letting them to interact with the seniors.
Rather I would like to inform you that NO RAGGING were ever held before by any seniors, we usually interact in order to maintain a harmonized relationship.
Let me inform you there are still students (from Bihar) studying for 8 YEARS who have been repeatedly detained in MATHS IV by eminent teacher like Pankaj Chetri (Localites) where as they have already cleared their departmental papers 4 years ago.
There are many more……… It wont end.
I guess my fellow friends will react to this column..
Analysis of all comments for and against i hereby give you the result of debate :
1) Students are highly frustrated ( localite and non-localite) towards administration bcoz of manipal acting like money- pal. The acoounts have been well done by FOR THE
STUDENT BY THE STUDENT so nonlocalite scores in this. He also wants to pass the guy
who is continuously faling in math for eight years by Pankaj Chettrai sir. But no. of years cant make a dumb guy genius and its unethical for sir to make him pass. That is illogical… so i take back scores from non-localite.
2) It was greatest mistake of the authority to take out LAN. LAN was there to help students and keep them busy.
3) It was the attitude of the teachers and mental harrasment to the students that led to this riot. There was fuel ready to ignite and football/vollyball match was the spark.
4) Kunga acc. to evrybody is one the rioter and everybody(non-localits) wants him to be expelled.
5) There should have not been ban on ragging completely. That would keep the new comers low would have shown respect to seniours. Coz seniours are what keeps the discipline intact in any institution not the administrators.
6) We are extremely racist people . Even the most educated people are having this feeling so what can we say about layman.
7) Everybody ……… i emphasized the word EVERYBODY …….. are having superiority feeling ……… a) arey yaar yeh kaisa bakwas jagha hai mazitar ….boring issey accha toh hamara chapra hai ……..b) bihar toh india ka sabsey worst state hai……c) hamra bihar mai toh sab kuch sasta(cheap) hai ……d) sikkim is for us only not for nonlocalite…….e) chinki people having small eyes and small brains ……… f) black swines and hijaras cant fight one and one ……… alwz in group …… ill behaved……..cunning g) local students pay only 1/3 rd of fees and enjoys the same facilities…….h) all the non-localites are bottom liners of AIEEE rankings………and so on ……. unending …….. other communities are also there …..
SO guys the conclusion is that this can not be concluded instead enjoy the holidays.
COME BACK TO SMIT SOON COZ ITS BORING WITHOUT YOU PEOPLE…….
MISSING YOU PEOPLE……….
” You know guys there nothing wrong in fighting, fighting is what makes the boy a man”
And there is no problem in SMIT there are so many non localites working here , students in pharmacy college ………
Guys it seems that very few people has ever been to different parts of our nation, for your kind informaton regarding girls, i have seen them roaming them round in the streets at mid night in places like noida, delhi, kolkata, patna, bhubaneswar, cochin, mumbai, bangalore, etc, that also very safely.
State doesnt matters the crime rather compared to Sikkim, this state is quite lagging behind. U peoples have never been to place thats the reason u guys are making wrong comments. Listening to some news doesnt means a lot. Anyways who cares what happens in Sikkim, the newspaper wala are to busy to cover news from well develope states not a province surrounded with jungles, where there are hardly any poplulation not even 1% of India’s Polulation.
Guys grow up, its a One Nation we must stay united, its more wiser to stick together and share our thoughts so that we can build a better future. Sikkim is not outside India though it may be a very small part of it.
Rahi baat about local n non local, I dont face it, because i have expanded my business almost in every place in India, but i was never been discriminated as non origin, law is equal for every citizens of India. I can buy a house in any places in India but I really feel sorry that Sikkimis doesnt allows so.
I have nothing personal, but all I want to say, I was also a part of this college and had been in Sikkim for 4 yrs. You guys are still immature. u dont know the every truth yet u think u aquire a great deal of knowledge.
I would rather advice everyone to look out get to place where u never have been, spend ur time over there for years and then u will get to know what the truth is. What u think about other state is totally different.
Haha… some of the comments are so hilarious. As for me, I wanno go back to college.
Peace and love.

well friends let me make u all claer before being a localite or non localite we are indians n we should not keep fighting among ourselves let us maintain brotherhood n communal harmong among ourselves…………….
i feel a tag of localite or non localite should be removed ………….it is very disapointing that in smit thete r groups where localites hang around with localites only or the biharis wid biharis only………..is it mentality difference …………all of us should remember under this fuckin administration we need the cooperation of each n every one let us create an environment where we can live togethe peacefully and have a sweet rememberance of college life what happened is not in favour of any person…………
and lastly let us all remember we are indians first……………JAI HIND
guys whatever happened could have been stopped.things cud have been better. but its happened, its past and the best is its gone. im not a student from smit but a pass out from smims. i was in sikkim for 5.5 years and believe me things were all so good here. i never thought that such an incidence would ever happen. i will request you all, be it students from sikkim or any otherr part of india to forget all that had happened and stay peaceful and united in this hour of crisis. You know why the human civilization still exists because we have the power to forget and move ahead. nothing will be present for ever and so is the case with this incident too. just forget and forgive. because voilence breeds voilence. you all are aspiring for the future and future is waiting 4 all of u with open arms. so meet ur future in peace and brotherhood.do not divide your selves into groups in the name of states or region. come on we all are educated and this is a very cheap thing to do. the fact is we are so much interdependent and we will always be, we have to coexist, because we are the sons and daughters of this great nation.so please grow up and rise to the needs of the situation, and pray for the once who are injured.

Hey guys chill up……read all the comments here…..got few things to notice (agree or disagree i dont care) :-
1) All the students of SMIT are really frustrated including me….
2) Everybody is trying to save his own ass
3) No body has the guts to speak against the administration….and now when they got a chance they are using it to their fullest and using beyond the book.
4) They are not even thinking that it may ruin their carriers
5) They are making the communal issue the main thing whrereas in reality the main reason was not that.
6) I personally know on that day 50% of the students were with the MOB bcoz of their grudge with the college and the administration.
***** Removal of hostel LAN was the root cause of such an incident…..and when this decision was taken by administration few experienced students had already told that such incident may occur any time. All the student of Hostel-1 had signed a request letter for reinstalling the LAN and it was to be forwarded to administration by our so called VP(Vice President of so called Student’s Council). But it was never been forwarded.
So guys if you people dont want that such an incident should not repeat in future…….then soon after reaching college start fighting for the LAN.I have got only 2 months to stay at hostel but its for all the 2nd and 3rd year students and for their future.I am with you….
THANK YOU…….BEST OF LUCK

A fight against the horrific administration of the college..
Really, is not the administration to be blamed for it??
