Tiny Utilities : Small is Good - V

Before I went on hiatus I had reviewed twelve small but extremely useful freewares in a series titled “Tiny Utilities - Small is Good”. Here, I present to you the fifth installment of the series.

QT Addressbar

I am not a big fan of Vista, but I have got to admit it’s new address bar with breadcrumb navigation system definitely makes life easier. Now with QT Addressbar you can do the same in Windows XP. After installing this you need to select QT Address bar from View–>Toolbars. and you would get a clone of the Vista address bar.

Platforms Supported : Windows XP 32 bit
Version Reviewed : 0.9.6

My Lockbox

Everyone has something to hide. And My Lockbox is probably one of the best free ways to do it. My Lockbox allows you to create a special folder in which you can dump all your private data. Once locked, this special folder is invisible to everyone - even to system admininstrators. Unlike many other similar folder locking utilities it makes the folder truly invisible to Windows i.e. even the space occupied by the folder is not displayed by windows explorer. Even enabling “showing hidden folders”or booting into safe mode doesn’t reveal the locked folder. But beware, the folder would be visible from another operating system eg. if the partition is mounted in Ubuntu. While My Lockbox does not offer industrial grade protection it’s a hassle free quick solution which is more than sufficient for casual users.

Platforms Supported : Windows 2000, XP, 2003, Vista (including WIndows XP x64)

SUMo (Software Updates Monitor)

This software notifies you when your installed software becomes out of date. It scans your computer for installed softwares and compares them with its online database to find out if you are using the latest version.

SUMo

Another similar software is FileHippo Update Checker. This software also works in a similar fashion and it uses FileHippo.com for comparison. The disadvantage of this is that FileHippo.com only hosts freewares, hence this tool doesnt work with sharewares.

Download SUMo (1.05 MB)
Platforms Supported : Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP/2003 Server/Vista
Version Reviewed : 1.9.0.45

Download FileHippo Update Checker (149 KB)
Platforms Supported : Windows Vista, XP, 2003, 2000, ME or 98
Version Reviewed : 1.022 Beta

Great post. Bookmarked it. Breadcrumbs is undoubtedly the most usable feature in Vista. Glad that someone ported it for XP.

My little brother was asking for such a tool for his XP box.
