AMD XGP

Advanced Micro Devices made an announcement few hours ago at Computex 2008, Taiwan that is surely going to please thousands of Notebook owners around the world. AMD unveiled ATI XGP external video solution, designed to deliver enthusiast-class desktop graphic performance and true multimedia upgradeability to notebooks.

AMD XGP ATI XGP utilises PCIe 2.0 and the externally powered and cooled graphics unit will be attached to the computer via a cable. This setup is capable of providing up to 4.0 Gbyte/s in each direction in bandwidth communication between the notebook and external graphics solution. ATI XGP will be fully compatible with ATI CrossFireX technology, thus you would be able to hookup multiple GPUs and increase system’s graphics performance.

The external graphics solution is especially good news for laptop owners as previously upgrading/changing a notebook’s graphics card was almost always impossible and definitely hasslesome. Not only that it also means that if you have multiple computers then you can attach the graphics unit to the computer which requires it instead of investing in graphics unit for both.

So are you as excited about this as I am? What is your take on this?
