Alky Project – Bringing DirectX 10 to Windows XP

This item was filled under [ Misc ]

Alky Project You must be aware that Microsoft has made DirectX 10 a Windows Vista exclusive. This is another evil move by Microsoft to force you to buy Windows Vista. Alky Project from Falling Leaf System wants to thwart Microsoft’s plans by porting DirectX 10 first to Windows XP and then to Linux and then OS X. The Alky Project Libraries would act as a proxy to all Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) accessed by a game. It would redirect API requests made by the game to existing platform functionality or custom implementations as needed.

The Alky Project released a preview last month, however they still have a long way to go. As far as I know it still does not work fully with any game. With fairly limited funding and manpower it wouldn’t be an easy task. Another major challenge is making Alky efficient enough to run DirectX 10 games on Windows XP without a degradation in performance. However, Brian Thomason – the 19 year old CEO of Falling Leaf Systems, is confident that Alky Project will be able to run Halo 2 and Shadowrun on Windows Xp soon after their launch.

But won’t it be slower compared the running DX 10 apps natively ?

It would be slower. As I mentioned in the article, making Alky efficient enough to run DirectX 10 games on Windows XP without a degradation in performance would be challenging.

Thank goodness for independent developers that actually use software. Microsoft should just abandon VISTA and support xp til the next iteration. I am hoping to skip VISTA with my xp 64, directx 10 support will definitely increase the feasiblity of that. Anyway just wanted to say thanks the hard work and look forward to me as future customer.

I really hope this turns out well! I’m definately looking forward to using DirectX 10 on XP. I seriously can’t believe how hard Microsoft is trying to push their failure OS right now. Anyways keep up the hard work!

I’m not big gamer at all, don’t feel to apply dx10 to my XP too much, but since I hooked to this article, I must say that I like the idea to make big Gill Bates a bit nervous :-) I’m with you and all Linux fans
