GreedyTorrent - Boost Your Ratio

This item was filled under [ Software ]

GreedyTorrentAn Indian Software Developer has come up with a software, that promises to boost your download to upload ratio in private torrent trackers.
GreedyTorrent acts as a local proxy for the BitTorrent Protocol. To start using it, you need to change your clients proxy settings to localhost:3456 . You can find detailed step by step instructions for doing this here. Once your torrent downloader connects to the tracker, GreedyTorrent modifies the upload amount reported. It is a configure it once and forget it, kind of software. Once configured, it sits quietly in the system tray and makes sure that the desired upload ratio is maintained.

GreedyTorrent

This software has infuriated a many people in the Torrent community. Many have termed it is unethical - which is ironic as most of these private torrent trackers distribute files illegally. One legitimate cause of worry is that everyone would now stop sharing files. I very much doubt that, that would happen. For example in one of the private torrent trackers that I use, the number of seeders is almost always greater than the number of leechers in spite of a ratio requirement of mere 0.5. I have noticed that people like to share, however most of the time they are restricted by the limitations of their internet connection.
On the other hand this would be a boon fo people with slower internet connections - esp. BSNL Dataone users in India. Dataone provides unlimited bandwidth with 256kbps download and only 64kbps upload speed (ratio of 4:!), which makes it very difficult for most people to maintain a 1:1 ratio. One of the problems I often face while downloading less popular files is that by the time I finish a download and upload about 70%- 80%, there are no leechers left.
Before, signing off I must warn all of you. Use it at your own Risk.
From the official website :

Although GreedyTorrent can be configured to give any multiple of your actual values, its generally not recommended to use values higher than 1.5 or 2 times your download. Multiples of actual upload are recommended to that of download. Higher values are likely to result in detection than smaller ones. So use the software at your own risk, only you are to be blamed if you get a ban!

For this very reason, I havent tried this software myself. However, if you are on the verge of getting banned, and are desperate, give it a try - you have nothing to loose.
You can some tips to survive without getting caught here.

This piece of software will only harm the BitTorrent community.

Imagine, no one will sees because they can use GreedyTorrent. This way you will only get low speeds.

I dont see that happening. Because, most people actually dont mind keeping the torrent on after they have completed their downloading, and seeding.
However, some overzealous admins create problems for people with slow upload speeds with stringent ratio requirements (1:1 sharing ratio isnt required). This aoolication would help them.

I am certain that this wont affect the torrent community as a whole, as people who can seed would seed, instead of cheating and risking a ban.

Of course, I am running on an unlimited 128 Kbps connection, so I guess I can seed whenever the connection is free from downloads. There are sites with stringent restrictions, it would be better to be careful since people now know everything about greedytorrent and there must be someway to detect its usage I guess
