It is a very long story(actually it is an epic called "Ramayana").
In short a king called Rama, who is belived to be the incarnation of God himself, killed the demon king Ravana of Lanka(now Sri Lanka) and returned home on this day. It is believed that the people lit oil lamps along the way to light their path in the darkness and the entire kigdom of Ayodhya celebrated the occasion by lighting lamps.Every year we celebrate diwali on this auspicious occasion.

If you have time go thorugh this <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramayana#Synopsis" rel="nofollow">entry</a> in Wikipedia

Thanks, Pallab.

Who secured this victory of good over evil, though?

Thanks, again.

Diwali is the festival of joy and lights. We all celebrate it by bursting firecrackers. It is a Hindu festival signifying the victory of good over evil.
